अक्षय तृतीया Akshaya Tritiya or Akha Teej falls on तृतीया (Tritiya, the third day) of शुक्ल पक्ष (Shukla Paksha, the waxing phase of the Moon), of वैशाख मास (Vaishakha Maas or month, corresponding to April-May of the Gregorian calendar).

Akshaya (अक्षय) means never diminishing and suggests that there are benefits of doing any जप (Japa, chant), यज्ञ (Yajna, worship with/through fire), पितृ तर्पण (Pitra-Tarpan, offering water to forefathers), दान पुण्य (Dan-Punya, Donation/ charity) on this day.

According to Hindu Mythology, Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, was born on Akshay Tritiya.

Akshaya Tritiya is believed to bring good luck and success. It is believed that Gold bought, including on Akshay Tritiya, will never diminish and would continue to grow or appreciate in value.

Akshaya Tritiya day is ruled by God Vishnu whose role in the Hindu Trinity is of the preserver. [2] According to Hindu mythology Treta Yuga began on Akshaya Tritiya day.

Vedic astrologers also consider Askshay Tritiya an auspicious day, free from all malefic effects. As per Hindu Astrology three lunar days, Yugadi, Akshaya Tritiya and Vijay Dashami don't need any Muhurta to start or perform any auspicious work, as these three days are free from all malefic effects.

On Akshaya Tritiya, devotees wake up early and take a bath, followed by lighting a lamp in the temple. They worship Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi.
