Si-Donyi celebrations, Arunachal Pradesh [2]
Arunachal Pradesh is the north eastern most state bordering Assam and Nagaland and shares an international border with China. Arunachal is a combination of `Arun’ meaning dawn, or sunrise, or the first ray of sunlight and `anchal’ meaning area or place. `Anchal’ also means the decorative part of a saree, the `pallu’ or the `border’, so Arunachal is the place decorated by the first rays of sunlight.
Si-Donyi a combination of Si (Earth) and Donyi (Sun), and New Year is celebrated by the Tagin tribe in January 4-7, 2026.
Tagin priests perform rituals to ensure good harvests and community well-being. Elders lead the prayers and share stories about the tribe's history and culture.
Celebrations include Ponung (of the Adi tribe) and other traditional dances; tug-of-war and archery.
Special dishes and Apong (traditional rice beer), are shared among the community.
