Ganesh/ Vinayaka Chaturthi celebrates the birth of Ganesh, son of Parvati and Shiva, by installing Ganesh idols in homes and in public places. Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated on Chaturth Tithi (fourth day) of Shukla Paksha (waxing or bright phase of the moon) in the Lunar month of Bhadrapada, corresponding to August/ September of the Gregorian Calendar for 10 days, ending with visarjan (immersion in a water body) of Lord Ganesha on Anant Chaturdashi (fourteenth day), with music and groups chanting गणपति बप्पा मोरया अगले बरस तू जल्दी आना, in a prominent/ nearby water body.

Author recalls a small water tanker parked in the Lalbagh Botanical garden, Bengaluru on September 7/8, 2014 for eco-friendly immersion of Ganpati.

Shri Bal Gangadhar (Lokmanya) Tilak in Pune in 1893, as part of the freedom struggle to mobilise masses, restarted the practice of celebrating festivals, including Ganesh Chaturthi in public places and in pandals.

Lord Ganesha is considered the God for auspicious starting of an activity, so when a new activity is started we seek blessings and chant/ pray श्री गणेश. We also chant/ pray श्री गणेश for the removal of obstacles as विघ्न हरता. Ganesha is also the God of wisdom and intelligence. Ganesha has 108 names and each name represents one of his attributes.

विनायक (V/Bināyaka) [3] is a name for Ganesha, appearing in the पुराण (Purāṇas) and in Buddhist तंत्र (Tantras). Vinayaka or Disambiguation, means the removal of ambiguity or making something clear. Disambiguation comprises `not;’ `ambiguous’ means `unclear;’ and the ending -tion makes it a noun. Simply disambiguation is the act of making something clear, which is achieved by prayers to Lord Ganesha.

गणपति (Ganapati) is a combined word गण (gaṇa), meaning `group’, and पति (pati), meaning `ruler’ or `lord.’

लम्बोदरा (Lambodara) is another name, which means one who has a pot belly, or a hanging belly. महोदरा (Mahodara) means one with a great belly.

गजानना (Gajānana) means one with the head/ face of an elephant.

The names विघ्नेश (Vighneśa) and विघ्नेश्वर (Vighneśvara) or the Lord of (remover of) obstacles refers to Lord Ganesh as the master and remover of obstacles (विघ्न हरता vighna harta).

एकदन्त (Ekdant) one with the one tooth/ tusk.

Lord Ganesha can be identified by his elephant head, which has a mythological story and possibly also reflects harmony with non-human living beings; in a seated posture displaying a big belly, with four arms.

The Siva temple Kakanmath at Sihoniya, Suhaniya (ancient Siṁhapānīya) in Morena District (Madhya Pradesh) [4] dates 1015 AD, and has a little Ganesh statute on a wall, with very fine design of jewellery, necklace, armlets, waistband, covering on upper part of the legs and anklets; a snake wrapped round his wrist and resting on his belly/ stomach. The statute has four arms, with an axe in one, and one hand in a mudra posture.

Offerings and prasāda are distributed to the community, and include sweets such as Modaka, favourite of Lord Ganesh and variety of Ladoos, made of Til (sesame) and Jaggery and Besan (gram/ chickpea flour).

Celebrations include chanting of Vedic hymns, prayers and upvasa/ vrata (fasting). The principal texts on Ganesha include the Ganesha Purana, the Mudgala Purana and the Ganapati Atharvashirsa. Brahma Purana and Brahmanda Purana are two other Puranic genre texts that cover Ganesh.

Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated in India, especially in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, West Bengal, and in Nepal, South and East Asian countries, and by the diaspora.

Almost all homes have Lord Ganesha, which could be a sculpture of stone, precious/ plain metal casting, wood work, painting on a glass or cloth or paper, embroidery on a fabric, made of porcelain or ceramic, and in today’s soft world as an image/ wall paper on the computer/ mobile.
