The fourth day of Chaitra Navratri is devoted to Maa Kushmanda, the fourth form of Durga, known as the creator. (Kushmanda) is a combination of कु (Ku, a little), ऊष्मा (Ushma, heat/ warmth) and अंडा (Anda, cosmic egg). Goddess Parvati in the form of सिद्धिदात्री (Siddhidatri), began living inside the centre of the Sun, and started radiating a distinct energy to the universe. Maa Kushmanda is stated to be the source of Sun’s (solar) energy and so vegetation and life on earth.
Green colour for the fourth Navratri, symbolizes nature and evokes a sense of fertility, growth, peace and serenity.
(Maa Kushmanda) is seated on a शेरनी (lioness) and has eight hands and is called अष्टभुजा देवी (Ashtabhuja Devi). On her right hands Maa Kushmanda holds a कमंडल (Kamandal) [2], a धनुष (Dhanush, Bow), a तीर (Teer, Arrow), and a कमल का फूल (kamal ka phool, Lotus flower).
On her left hands is an अमृत कलश (Amrit Kalash, an earthen pot having nectar), जप माला (Japa Mala, a garland of beads, which aids chanting of mantras/ prayers), a गदा (Gada, Mace), and a चक्र (Chakra (sharp edged wheel used as a weapon).
Devotees worship Maa Kushmanda on the fourth day of Navratri for health and well-being; to overcome obstacles; for spiritual enlightenment; and for harmony and prosperity.
Maa Kushmanda is believed to be the creator of the universe and is fond of pumpkins.

Aarti of Goddess Kushmanda

[2] A Kamandal is made of dry gourd (pumpkin) or coconut shell, metal, wood of the Kamandalataru tree, or from clay, usually with a handle and sometimes with a spout. Hindu ascetics or yogis often use it for storing drinking water. The water-filled kamandal, which is invariably carried by ascetics, is representative of a simple and self-contained life.
