सप्तमी (Saptami), the seventh day of Shardiya/ Ashwin Navratri is dedicated to माँ कालरात्रि (Maa Kalaratri/ Kalratri/ Kaalratri). Kalaratri is a combination of two words - Kala meaning death, and Ratri meaning night, symbolizing darkness.
Maa Kalaratri rides a donkey, [2] and has four hands. Her right hands are in अभय मुद्रा (Abhaya Mudra, Blessing posture) and वरदमुद्रा (Varada/n mudra, boon posture). She carries a तलवार (Talvaar, Sword) and a घातक लोहे का हुक (deadly iron hook) in her left hands.
Maa Kalaratri has a dark complexion, unkempt hair and three eyes. She appears in a red coloured attire and/or tiger skin with a lot of rage in her fiery eyes, her skin turns black. The red colour portrays prayer and reassures devotees that Maa will protect them from all harm.
Maa Kalratri is regarded as one of the many destructive forms of Maa Shakti which include Durga, Bhadrakali, Bhairavi, Chamunda, Chandi, Kali, Mahakali, Mrityu, and Rudrani.
Because of her Shubh or auspicious power within her ferocious form, Maa Kalaratri is also known as Maa Shubhankari (माँ शुभंकरी).
Maa Kalratri bestows the believer with सिद्धि और निद्धि (siddhi and niddhi, accomplishment and wealth).
On Saptami, devotees wake up early, take a bath and wear new clothes. Devotees perform Navgraha Puja with rice, Ganga jal, dry fruits, flowers, and incense sticks. Prasad made of jaggery is offered to Maa Kaalratri as bhog. Some devotees offer रात की रानी (jasmine) to Maa Kaalratri, which is her favourite flowers.
Maha Saptami is a day marked by the sacred Nabapatrika Puja, the central ritual of Durga Puja. This ceremony, also known as Kolabou Puja, involves the worship of nine plants - banana, turmeric, pomegranate, ashok, paddy, bilva, barley, kacchi and manka - each symbolizing a divine manifestation of Goddess Durga.
The plants are tied together, bathed in a holy river, adorned in a red-bordered white sari, and placed beside Maa Durga’s idol, signifying abundance, fertility and nature’s blessings. This ritual is the first major ceremony of Durga Puja, ushering in the main worship with Prana Pratishtha and Shodashopachara Puja.
Maa Kalaratri governs the planet Shani, eliminates the harmful effects of the planet from her devotees' life and brings them happiness.
