या देवी सर्वभू‍तेषु मां चन्द्रघण्टा रूपेण संस्थिता।

नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥

Tritiya (third day) Shardiya/ Ashwin Navratri is dedicated to Maa Chandraghanta. Chandraghanta derived from ardhachandra (half-moon), which looks like a bell, which Parvati adorned on her forehead after marrying Shiva.

Maa Chandraghanta has ten hands. She is holding a त्रिशूल (Trishul ,Trident), गदा (Gada, Mace), तलवार (Talvaar, Sword) and कमंडल (Kamandal, a traditional special water vessel made from dry gourd), वरदमुद्रा (Varadamudra, yoga/ prayer posture) in her five left hands.

She carries a तीर (Teer, Arrow), कमल का फूल (kamal ka phool, Lotus flower), जप माला (Japa Mala, a garland of beads which aids chanting of mantras/ prayers) and धनुष (Dhanush, Bow) in her four right hands and the fifth right hand is in अभय मुद्रा (Abhaya Mudra, Blessing posture).

Maa Chandraghanta has a golden complexion, rides a tiger, symbolizing bravery. Her third eye is always open, showing that she is always ready to destroy demons. She is the embodiment of beauty and a symbol of bravery. Maa Chandraghanta is the third incarnation of Goddess Parvati. Maa Chandraghanta is terrible and scary for demons and enemies, but compassionate and loving for devotees.

Maa Chandraghanta story

The mythological story is the `Daksha Yagnam’ incident from Shiva Purana. Devi Sati the daughter of Daksha and Prastuti, married Lord Shiva against their wishes. During a grand yagna organised by Daksha, Devi Sati and Shiva arrive unwelcome and are insulted. Humiliated and hurt, Sati immolated herself in the fire of yagna. This incident affected Lord Shiva who got detached from worldly affairs, took mortification and went for deep meditation in the mountains. There is a near identical story of `Bathukamma’ and can be seen at the link
