Tritiya (third day) Shardiya/Ashwin Navratri commemorates the worship of Maa Chandraghanta, derived from ardhachandra (half-moon), which looks like a bell or Chandraghanta, which Parvati adorned on her forehead after marrying Shiva.

Maa Chandraghanta has 10 hands. She is holding a Trishul (Trident), Gada (Mace), Talvaar (Sword) and Kamandal (special water vessel), Varadamudra (yoga/prayer posture) in her five left hands. She carries a Teer (Arrow), Lotus flower, Japa Mala (a mala of beads to aid chanting of verses) and Dhanush in her four right hands and the fifth right hand is in Abhaya Mudra (blessing posture).

Maa Chandraghanta is golden in complexion and rides a tiger a symbol of bravery. Her third eye is always open, showing that she is always ready to destroy demons. She is the embodiment of beauty and a symbol of bravery. Maa Chandraghanta is the third incarnation of Goddess Parvati. Maa Chandraghanta is terrible and scary for demons and enemies but extremely compassionate and loving for devotees.

Maa Chandraghanta story

Devi Sati the youngest daughter of Daksha and mother Prastuti, married Lord Shiva against their wishes. During a grand yagna organised by her father, she reached the yagna without invitation, that led Daksha to insult her husband Lord Shiva, in front of everyone. Humiliated and hurt, Sati immolated herself in the fire of yagna. This incident affected Lord Shiva to the core and he got detached from worldly affairs, took mortification and went for deep meditation in the mountains.

नवरात्रि के तीसरे दिन चंद्रघंटा का ध्यान।

मस्तक पर है अर्ध चन्द्र, मंद मंद मुस्कान॥

दस हाथों में अस्त्र शस्त्र रखे खडग संग बांद।

घंटे के शब्द से हरती दुष्ट के प्राण॥

सिंह वाहिनी दुर्गा का चमके सवर्ण शरीर।

करती विपदा शान्ति हरे भक्त की पीर॥

मधुर वाणी को बोल कर सब को देती ग्यान।

जितने देवी देवता सभी करें सम्मान॥

अपने शांत सवभाव से सबका करती ध्यान।

भव सागर में फंसा हूं मैं, करो मेरा कल्याण॥

नवरात्रों की मां, कृपा कर दो मां।

जय मां चंद्रघंटा, जय मां चंद्रघंटा॥

मां चंद्रघंटा के मंत्र:

पिण्डजप्रवरारूढ़ा चण्डकोपास्त्रकेर्युता।

प्रसादं तनुते मह्यं चंद्रघण्टेति विश्रुता॥

या देवी सर्वभू‍तेषु मां चन्द्रघण्टा रूपेण संस्थिता।
