National Handloom Day, August 7, 2023

National Handloom Day is celebrated on August 7, remembering the launch of Swadeshi Movement in India, which began on August 7, 1905, as a socio-economic-political struggle for India’s independence.

The need and elements of the socio-economic struggle are still relevant, since a large proportion of the weavers belong to weaker sections of society, including women, who require recognition and support, in the form of affirmative action. Please step out and purchase a handloom product, preferably from a craftsperson, if possible by visiting a handloom cluster.

Maybe politicians/leaders should consider wearing handloom on at least August 7. A request to some film personalities has had a positive response. A handloom fashion show would be a treat. Please post on social media, a handloom product you own, tag others. Please do anything that can highlight handlooms, as a recognition of the craftsperson.

Weaving is both an art and a science, brilliantly crafted by artisans, based on tradition, folksongs, which capture the design, and represents India's rich heritage.

A list of handloom saree weaving clusters is given below, to help you identify with it.

Short clips of weavers of Chanderi, Madhya Pradesh, some with a smile despite poverty, are given below.
